Ask
The Coach
by Sharon Hooper
Dear Coach,
I am in a rut – with life
and business! My friends and professional work just don’t
stimulate me any more. I’ve had the same friends for years, and I
know I’ve changed, but a lot of the people I hang out with
are still doing the same things they did twenty years ago! I’m
dragging my feet every morning dreading work because I simply don’t
know what to do with my friends or my work! How do I change
my friends, or do I?! And do you think “changing the scenery” will
help re-motivate me in business? Help!!
--Itching for a change
Dear Itching,
Wow! I can see a whole life
makeover approaching. How exciting!! There seems to be two major
issues going on here, but they both definitely weave together. I’m
going to address the “friend” query in this column and continue with
“work” and “how-to” in the May issue. However, some of the
following suggestions may be applicable for both the personal and
professional sides of your life.
There is a card in my Mary
Magdalene card deck that refers to this topic about the people in
our lives. “The Beloved Disciple” card illustrates Mary and John
standing beside Jesus. In Gnostic Christianity, ‘right’ signified
the psychic realm and ‘left’ referred to the realm of matter. In
the picture, Jesus is telling Mary and John that because of their
high state of consciousness, they have been chosen to stand at his
‘left’ and ‘right’.
As we
grow along our path, our needs and wants may change frequently. But
other people in our life can be satisfied and happy with a lifestyle
they have led for a long time and have no desire to modify
anything. There is no right or wrong here – it’s just ‘what is’.
And you are ready for transformation. Using the preceding
example from Gnostic Christianity, try this exercise first and then
go on to the second part.
-
Write down the names of everyone that you spend a lot of time
with. They can be friends, relatives, coworkers – anyone. Don’t
give this a lot of thought for now.
-
Writing your name in the center of a piece of paper, and referring
to the Gnostic meaning of ‘right’ and ‘left’, place all the names
on one side or the other of your name.
-
Spend a few minutes looking at each name, and where they are
placed, and jot down any immediate thoughts that come up for you.
Some general questions to ponder as you peruse
the names are: What similarities are there in all of these people?
Why did you attract them to you? Do they still meet your needs and
desires as friends? Are they loving and respectful and support you
on this life’s journey?
This second part of the exercise is about
attracting who, what and how in your life! Think about the
type of people you would like to be surrounded with. What qualities
do you want to be exhibited around you – warmth, humor, nurturing,
groundedness?
Now make three columns on a large piece of paper.
(Don’t cramp your style.)
WHO I want to attract WHAT I want to
attract HOW will I attract
Even though you already have names of people on
the ‘left and right’ of you, put them aside while you fill in
columns one and two above. Next month, we’ll look at the
“how” you will attract.
For now, be totally objective about who
you want in your life. The what you want needs focus. When
you get absolutely clear about what you desire your life to look
like, you will start automatically attracting the circumstances and
people to make it materialize.
If you have gotten this far
J,
re-look at the list of who is on the left and right sides of you,
and see if they are also in your “who I want to attract” column.
What thoughts come to mind? Are changes due? Overall, these
exercises are meant to give you some beginning insight on how you
want to make changes to attract exactly what and who
you desire.
Experiment with your own ‘attraction’ plan of
action. Try it on paper first, and if it makes sense to you, begin
your strategy for renovating your life. This turn in the path may
be very challenging for you, but you get to choose the life,
and the people in it, that you desire. If you would like to explore
an in-depth approach to your own “Attraction Plan of Action”, please
get in touch with me! I am passionate about your success!
